about

A traditional song in Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic). The poet Sean Mac Ambróis wrote the lyrics in the mid 19th century after emigrating from his native Co Antrim to Scotland and being stricken with "cumhaí" (longing for home).

lyrics

Och, dá mbeinn féin in Ardaigh Cuan
In aice an tsléibhe 'tá i bhfad uaim
Ba annamh liom gan dul ar cuairt
Go gleann na gcuach dé Domhnaigh

Curfá:
Agus och och Éire ‘lig is ó
Éire líonn dubh agus ó
'Sé mo chroí tá trom agus brónach

Nach tuirseach mise anseo liom féin
Nach n-airím guth coiligh, lon dubh na traon'?
Gealbhan, smólach, naoscach fhéin,
‘gus chan aithním féin an Domhnach!

Curfá

(Translation)
Oh, if only I were in Ardaigh Cuan
Beside that mountain that’s so far away
I was rarely without a visit
To the cuckoo's glen on a Sunday

Chorus:
And alas, oh Ireland
I am longing so for Ireland
My heart is heavy and sad

I am full of sorrow here alone
I don’t hear the cockerel, blackbird or corncrake
Nor the sparrow, thrush or snipe
I don’t even notice it is Sunday

Chorus
